A 30-guest micro wedding in October 2024: a morning ceremony in the Friends Room at the State Library of NSW, photos among the reading rooms, then a long lunch at Ventuno on the water at Walsh Bay.

The brief

Bridget and Ellie wanted warm pinks, oranges and reds, not pastels, and a look that felt loose and a little unstructured rather than neat and uniform. They loved shape and texture, and named flowering gum, amaranthus, orchids, roses, dahlias and poppies as favourites. For the bouquets they asked for no greenery, just flowers.

Ceremony in the Friends Room

The Friends Room is all timber, bookshelves and tall windows, so we kept the ceremony to a pair of statement arrangements on white plinths, with amaranthus trailing down the sides and clusters at the base. The colours stand out against the dark timber without competing with the room.

Lunch at Ventuno

After drinks at the library, everyone moved to Ventuno for lunch. The couple brought their own plinths, so we set the ceremony arrangements up again in the same layout, and they added fruit to the long table, which we styled in among low bowl arrangements and bud vases.

The details that made it work

  • Two venues, one set of ceremony flowers: designing for plinths meant they could move and be set up again in minutes. More in our guide to reusing your wedding flowers.
  • A morning ceremony and a long lunch made the most of the light, and kept it relaxed for 30 guests.
  • No pack-down: guests took the flowers home, and the hired bowls and bud vases came back to our studio within the week.
